The Resident Evil movie franchise has successfully spawned a total of six movies, but it all could have been very, very different.
Milla Jovovich, who plays the lead hero Alice, came close to pulling out of the first movie because she was unsatisfied with some significant script changes – all revolving around Michelle Rodriguez’s character.
In case you need a refresher, Rain – played by Rodriguez – was a commando who assisted Alice in her mission at the Hive.

Jovovich recalled some of the behind-the-scenes drama leading up to the filming of the movie with Inverse.
“I almost quit the movie,” she said. “I was shooting something else, and [director] Paul [WS Anderson] had hired Michelle Rodriguez to play Rain. And she had just come off Girlfight and there was Oscar buzz. She was very hot at that moment, and my hotness had sort of been already four years old by that point.
“So he rewrote the script for her. It pretty much made my character ‘the girl’, and Rain was ‘the guy’. She got all of my big action scenes, and she became like Alice. And then Alice became this tag-along.”
Jovovich said that she was “livid” when she read the updated script and requested a serious “talk” with Anderson.
“Paul ended up coming over that evening and we literally sat for three hours and went through the script, page by page,” she said.
“He was like, ‘What do you mean? This didn’t change that much?’ So I was like, ‘Okay, why don’t we start with page one?’. I pointed out every time I felt like my great scenes were taken away. That was how we started our relationship.”
Jovovich and Anderson eventually got together and are now married with two children.
The sixth and final Resident Evil movie The Final Chapter was released in 2016.
There have been talks of a reboot, but Jovovich has her doubts about it.
