Aha! Another core Pokémon RPG is in development for the Switch after all

Nintendo revealed during today’s pre-recorded E3 presentation that Game Freak, the developer responsible for core-series Pokémon games, is making a Pokémon RPG for Nintendo Switch.

The announcement was bare-bones; we know it’s happening, but other than that, Nintendo declined to say anything about the project.

The news doesn’t come as a huge surprise. Leaks to Eurogamer toward the end of last year indicated that Game Freak was working on a version of Sun and Moon for the Switch and that it was due summer 2017. Clearly the latter forecast no longer holds true, for whatever reason, but the former could be bang on the money.

So is Nintendo talking about Sun and Moon for Switch? Hopes for the game’s arrival were gently quelled last week when Pokken Tournament DX was announced for Switch, leading some to believe that a core series RPG was off the cards.

But at around the same time, a listing for Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon for 3DS and Switch appeared on The Pokémon Company’s website, followed by it being hastily retracted. Thanks for spotting that, Eurogamer.

The Pokémon Company has blamed the listing on a “clerical error”, insisting that the game is coming exclusively to the 3DS. “Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon are coming exclusively to Nintendo 3DS family of systems and are not due for release on Nintendo Switch,” it said.

Whatever the truth behind the Switch and Pokémon mystery, a game is coming, and it’s a full-fat RPG you’ll probably be able to enjoy on the big screen.
