Nintendo’s briefing at video-games show E3 has finally revealed a release date for the next flagship Mario game – Super Mario Odyssey – and provided a first look at how the much-anticipated Switch title actually plays.
After early suggestions of a ‘holiday’ (read: Christmas) release, the increasingly bonkers-looking Mario adventure will be in our hands earlier than expected on October 27.
Odyssey marks a return for the series to the open level designs and exploration of Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine. Producer Yoshiaki Koizumi worked on both games, as well as more recent titles like Super Mario Galaxy, and the latest footage shows off expansive environments, such as the skyline of New York-inspired New Donk City.

The city is one of multiple worlds featured in the game, many of which are the more colourful, vibrant environments we’ve come to expect, but this game’s principle innovation seems to be Mario’s hat, now a fully fledged character called Cappy.
The sentient headgear can be thrown (allowing Mario to use it as a platform), possess enemies, or even throw himself up into the air. That’s just a handful of the things we’ve seen: Nintendo clearly has a lot of new and interesting mechanics up its sleeve. We’re excited to see more.
