Night in the Woods is an adventure game that takes place in the home town of Mae – the main character. The game accentuates relationships between characters, which is why you will be spending most of the time getting to know your character’s old friends and choosing whom you want to spend time with. In the game, you will sometimes have to make choices, or pick a specific dialogue option. However these are of negligible importance from the viewpoint of the story, and do not weigh on the course of the story. What developers focused on is rather telling a story and strengthening bonds between the main characters and her friends.

Night in the Woods is a nostalgic arcade-adventure game that places an emphasis on the plot, exploration and characters. The game was created by an independent team known as Infinite Ammo, led by Alec Holowka, who created the soundtrack for TowerFall: Ascension and co-developed the arcady Aquaria. To a large extent, Night in the Woods was financed through a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter, which achieved success within 26 hours.
The game is set in Possum Springs – a small mining town. The last mine gets closed and the town falls into decline because people do not have work any more. The player assumes the role of Mae – a cat with paranormal abilities, that quits her studies in order to return home and spend the last years of her youth with old friends. Among them, the player will find Bea – Mae’s best friend, Gregg and Angus, who both wish to move somewhere else finally, or a hobo called Germ. The protagonist soon finds out that both her hometown and old companions have changed substantially and nothing is now as it used to be. Moreover, the streets get deserted unnaturally at night and something what could be at the bottom of it is lurking in the woods nearby.

Can talking cats and other animals go together with mature topics like transience and fragility of life? Night in the Woods proves they can. This lovely Kickstarter-funded adventure game is launching in a couple of weeks.
Here you can find some general advices for adventure game Night in the Woods:
Losing the minigame always results in some funny outcome, but does not affect the course of action.
- Mae can jump high. To do that, she first has to take two regular jumps and then the third one that is boosted.
- While in your dreams, you usually have to find four musicians and return to the starting point.
- It is a good idea to check your computer every day, as you will be getting posts from your friends.
- Contrary to the apparent, dialogues in the game do not affect the storyline in any way. Sometimes it will only result in a different dialogue line from a friend.
- Depending on whom you spend your free time with, you will be talking with them in the game ending. Also, you will get to play as that character in one of the sequences, later into the game.
- Losing a minigame never means that you have to reload the game. It always results in alternative, hilarious lines. For example, if in one of the missions you will help Gregg up the stairs with a heavy box and fall down several times, Gregg will get angry and you will take the elevator instead.
- To jump onto the roof in the town, you first have to climb up the tree next to the house, thanks to which you will get onto electric lines you can jump on.

The game starts right after you return to your home town. Nobody is waiting there for you, so you can see the platform and go to the exit. The door is blocked by the maintenance worker and he does not want to let you through, because the platform is still inaccessible.

You will be allowed through only after you bring him a soda from the vending machine (you first have to talk to him a specific number of times). Approach the machine at the other end of the room and click on it . You will receive the soda and will be able to give it to the man. He will let you through.
Now, you will have to go to the other end of the location. Your character will point out that the shortest way home is through the woods. This makes the next location.
After you jump down, climb onto the darkest branch at the other end and jump on it until it snaps. Do that using the Space bar (default for jumping). Thanks to this, you will be able to move on.
To proceed on, you have to jump smoothly onto the tree.
Now you will get near a kid ship. To be able to continue, you have to jump onto the tree. For that, jump onto the tree trunk with number 2 on it, then onto number 3 and finally onto the tree. You will have to do that rhythmically, or Mae will be unable to jump high enough. From the tree, jump onto the tower on the ship, and over the electric line towards the end of the location.
Eventually, a policeman will drive you home.
You will get into a room, where you should go to your room, after a short conversation with the father. To climb the stairs, you have to jump onto it first. Your room is at the top floor. After you enter it, interact with the bed to continue.
In the morning, come down and talk to the mother before you leave.
After you leave, you will not be able to go right too far, so go left. On your way, talk to the people you meet and learn about the town. Your destination is the “Snack Falcon” building at the other end of the town.
Gregg will be happy to see you.
Inside, you will meet your friend, who will be very happy to see you. He will even go with you to meet with the band that you used to play with.
After a while, a minigame will start. It looks like Guitar Hero. You simply have to press correct keys at the right moment. For someone who is off practice, this may be difficult and after you make many mistakes, your friends will be disappointed, but they will hope you will soon get in the right shape.
After a while, the screen will change again and this time, you will have to catch the pizza slice that you want to eat, while listening to your friends. During the conversation, you will learn that one of them has gone missing recently.
A dismembered limb is not what you see every day.
After you leave the bar, you will find a severed hand in the street. Using a stick, you have to roll the sleeve up a bit to reveal a strange tattoo. Then, you will call the police and one of your friends will take you back home.
Now, the only things to do is talk to the father and go to sleep. After you wake up, Mae will comment on her long absence from the Internet. It will turn out that your computer is infested with viruses and you have to get it repaired. Fortunately, your friend Angus knows about computers and you will now have to find him.
Before that, you can visit Gregg, who has mugs over his ears and claims that he can hear the ocean. He will tell you that, most probably, Angus is at work. Go right of “Snack Falcon” and you will find “Video Outpost “Too””. However, Angus has not reported for work today and the employee there will suggest that you may find him at home.
Angus is not at work, so you will have to go to his place.
Angus’s place is to the left of the shop’s entrance. Its number is 1063. After you enter the block, you will have to find the right intercom button to call your friend. You can play with the intercom a little and press all of the buttons, or simply press the second one from the top. However, it will turn out that Angus’s button does not work. You will have to press any other button and, when it starts to spark, click on it. You will take a shock, but Angus will answer.
After a while, you will cut to his apartment and, after a short conversation, Angus will give you a pen drive that should help you with the computer.
After you get back home, enter your room and plug the pen drive in. After a while, all will start to function properly.
On the Desktop, there is a game – “Demon Tower” that you can launch at any moment. Also, you have two unread messages, one from Gregg and the other from Angus. Angus will tell you about DemonTower, whereas Gregg tells you about a party soon to be thrown.
It’s night already, so you should go to sleep. In the morning, check your computer for messages, because Gregg will instruct you to go to Bea, who works in Market House, and ask her if she would give you and him a lift to the party. Go there and, after a short conversation, she will agree to do that. You now have to go back home and wait.
Spend some time with your family, then you will cut back to your room. Take a look into the mirror and ponder on the purpose of life. After that, you will go to the party.
Party in the woods.
It will turn out that there is Cole at the party, whom Mae used to go out with. After you spot him, you will be unable to talk to him at first, so go to talk to Gregg twice. After that, it will seem to you as though you can talk to Cole. After you approach him, Mae will realize she is too sober for that. Go to the table and have a drink. Then, approach Cole and start talking. In the course of the conversation, you will realize that you need another drink.
After you drink the beer, go to talk to your friends and they will tell you to take a seat by the fire. After you do that, wait for a moment, for Cole to come by. An argument will ensue, after which Bae will take you back home.
The main object to destroy in your dream.
After you fall asleep, you will start dreaming. Keep going right, until you reach a strange structure that tyou have to destroy with the interaction key. After that, the dream will end.
You start the second chapter after you wake up. It is best to use the computer again. You will learn that Gregg and Bea want to meet with you. Downstairs, talk to the mother and leave. First, stop by Bea’s place, because it is closer, and after a short conversation go to Gregg’s place.
The band’s rehearsal can grow on Guitar Hero fans.
During the conversation with him, select the dialogue option that will take you to the rehearsal of the band. You will have to play the same Guitar Hero minigame again. You have to press correct keys in specific order, which may be a bit difficult. However, you do not really have to beat the game.
Your friends’ reaction will be either positive or negative, as a result. After the rehearsal, you can do something with Bea or Gregg.
If you choose to hang out with Gregg, you will visit an abandoned shop.
Hang out with Gregg 1
If you decide to hang out with Gregg, you will accompany him to an abandoned shop, where he is to meet up with a friend. For a longer while, you will only have a conversation, but at some point you will run into closed door. To find the key, you will have to climb onto the shelves into the office at the upper floor. This will look the same as in the case of climbing the tree at the beginning of the game. You have to gain speed and jump onto successive shelves without stopping.
In the room that you reach, there are three masks and you will have to pick one for Gregg. After you have picked one, you will get to the stairs and you will have to move according to the arrows. Moving in the wrong direction results in restarting the level. However, if you knock off Gregg several times, he will get angry and you will take the elevator.
Afterwards, you will go get something to eat. Mae, will ask Gregg to open his mouth, thanks to which you can throw dumplings into his mouth. However, if you keep missing, Gregg will get angry about such waste of dumplings.
After that, you will go back home. Before you go to sleep, you can talk to the father and check out the computer again.
Hang out with Bea 1
After you leave with Bea, you will spend several moments in the car. After a while, you will arrive at your destination. While at the funfair, you can take a look around and talk with your friend about the good old times.
Eventually, you will enter a shop named “Urevolution”.
Inside, you will exchange several words and a minigame will appear. The game consists in catching the item and placing it in the bag, so that the shop assistand does not notice anything. If he looks at you you will have to put the item down and try again after he looks away.
In the next game, you have to occupy the shopkeeper with a conversation, so that Bae can steal something. The two correct dialog lines are:
“You-Revolution, or like You,re-revolution?”
“That really dumb”
Now you have to approach the table with Bae and after a quite long conversation, climb to the first floor, jump over the red rocks and touch the device with the blue stripe on it. This way, you will disable power supply.
Afterwards, you will watch several more cutscenes, where there are no minigames, or interactions. After that, you will be back home.
In the next dream (and each following one) you will have to find musicians on towers.
As soon as you fall asleep, you will dream another dream. For it to end, you have to find small towers that musicians appear in, after you coe closer. One of them is right to the left, after you start on the ground. Two of them are on the right, but you will have to climb a little to get to them. The last one is on the left, up above, where you have to walk over ropes and jump onto the ledge. As soon as you have discovered all of them, return to the starting point and the dream will end.
After you wake up, check your computer to find out that Angus has left the town and Gregg feels lonely. Also this day can be spent wither with him or Bea.
If you go with Bea, you’ll do some tinkering.
Hang out with Bea 2
If you choose Bea, you will gave to accompany her to her client, where she is to perform repairs. Wait for all the cutscenes to end and you will cut to the basement. While Bea is busy repairing, you can jump onto the dresser and collect the angling rod. Then, take the yellow fan, a tennis racket and a green garden gnome.
Approach the stove now, where you will have to make several choices, thanks to which you can “help” Bea. Regardless of the choices you make, Bea will manage to fix everything before you carry out your insidious plan.
After the repair, go to the exit, where it will turn out that the elderly lady locked you up. Approoach the furnace and let Bea think. Then, you can take the baseball bat and start banging it against the furnace. Thanks to this, the lady will hear you and she will open the door.
Now you will have to impress Bea with a magic trick. Run to the right to reach the fan. Collect the fireflies there, by running over them and return to Bae to push the story forward. If nothing happens, you must have simply missed a firefly, or two.
After you come back home, check your computer before you go to sleep.
Hang out with Gregg 2
If you go with Gregg, after a short cutscene, you will appear near a car, and he will simply talk you into damaging it. You happen to have a baseball bat with you, so destroying it (default key C) should be easy.
The next minigame is about removing the battery. First, reove leaves over it by swiping them away with your hand. Then, you will have to break two locks. In spite of that, you will be shocked by electricity and you will watch a cutscene in your subconscious. Then, you will return with Gregg to your appartment.
After that, Gregg will ask toy to help him assemble a robot. First, you only have to attach the clamp to the red end of the battery. Now, you will have to assemble the robot. There is no specific solution to this. Simply, arrange the parts in any way you want and after you decide it is ready, click on the robot icon in the upper-right corner.
The last thing to do now is turning the thing on. You have to click several times, because the switch will not work the first time you do that. Afterwards, go back home and go to sleep.
Another nightmare and again, you have to find four musicians.
While you are asleep, you will be haunted by your dreams again. You will have to do the exactly same thing as before, i.e. find four musicians in spots scattered around the map and return to the starting point.
On the next day, you can out again and talk to your friends. You will have to make the same choice as usually.
You can go to the third location to the left and climb up the stairs (where the metro entrance is). Previously, the passage was closed. Thanks to the fact that it is open now, you can go to the church, where there is a congregation. See the cutscene.
If you go with Gregg, you will have to knife-fight.
Then, return to the choice of the friend you want to spend the day with:
Hang out with Gregg 3
In the morning, you and Gregg will take a bike trip. You will have to wait until you reach the foreset, where you start talking. It will turn out that you will have to play a knife-fight wit Gregg. The one to his their opponent three times, wins. To move the hand, use movement keys and to stab, press the interaction key (default key C). DO not give up, if you fail the first time around. Gregg will still give you several oppostunities to get your back at him.
After the battle, Gregg will have the idea that you could break the tree that you are standing on. Therefore, you have to jump on it a little for it to snap.
After that, there is another challenge for you. You have to hit the target using a crossbow. It is best to try and hit everything you can to hear as many Gregg’s comments as possible. Note: you cannot shoot birds.
After that, you will have a longer conversatiob after which you will get back home and go to sleep. You can talk to the father several times and ask him to move around several boxes in the room upstairs. He will do that later.
Hang out with Bea 3
After you go with Bea, you will end up in a grocery store. Bea will ask you to pick three ingredients for her dinner. You have a free hand here and you can pick whatever you want. As soon as you do that, return to Bea.
After that, you will watch several cutscenes, where you take no active part. Then, you will cut to Bea’s apartment. There, several scenes will take place, in which you will have to pick several dialogue options. However, none of them turn out to be correct and a quarrel will ensue, after which you will get back home.
Each dream is different a little, but the general idea remains the same.
After you lay down in bed, you will have aother dream. Again, you will have to find four musicians. One of them is up bove, on the right and the second one down below, on the left. To find the third one, you wil have to climb just like in the case of the first one, but go left next to the large caption. To find the last one, climb up the tower, just like for the first one and jump right onto the rooftops halfway up. Afterwards, return to the starting point.
For Halloween, Mae will dress up like a witch.
After you wake up, it will turn out that it’s Halloween. If you talk to the mother, you will have an argument about your future. You can leave and halfway through the town, you will spot a policeman blocking the road. You can talk to him, after you simply pass him by, Mae will stop and say she should return home to prepare for the evening. Also, you can stop by at Gregg’s place and follow him into the scrapyard, where you will be breaking some lamps that he is tossing.
Regardless of whether you do that or not, you should go back home.
To prepare for the evening, stand in front of the mirror in your room and let Mae get ready. Night will fall and you can go out. Go to Bae’s shop and start a conversation that will lead to the performance that you have earlier prepared on Halloween. During the performance, you can pick various dialogue options that will result in various commentaries from your friends. You can pick either serious dialoge options or hilarious ones, to confuse your friends. Either way, the ending will be the same.
The scene of Halloween murder.
After the ceremony ends, you will end up outside and you will witness a possible murder. Of course, Mae will follow the murderer and you will finally spot the man on the hill. A policeman will appear behind you, but the perpetrator will be gone. You will be taken back home.
In the next sequence, however, you will get back to the woods, and the screen will turn red. Go straight ahead and the chapter will end.
You will wake up in the morning, in you rroom. Open the computer and to learn that the band rehearsal is today. This is a perfect opportunity to tell everybody about the events of the past evening.
Go to see mom and Bae, before you go to see Gregg. Also, you can notice that the right side of the town is finally accessible, but there is nothing, or no one there, apart from the bridge. As usual, there will only be some minor changes in the town, everyone will have something to say, but nothing special, concerning the murder.
Visit Gregg and go to the band rehearsal. Again, you will have to play Guitar Hero. After the rehearsal, Mae will tell everyone about what happened last night. Mae and Bea will decide to go to the library to search for clues about the most recent disappearances. The librarian will tell you to go to floor 3. Go to the lift.
Find the computer in the blue room.
You can go to the first floor, but this is not the location that you are looking for. After you are done exploring, return to the lift and go up. Approach the computer in the blue room and a minigame will start. You can find a lot of information about the ghost.
The first newspaper clue: “Spectral Happennings at Possum Jump”
Druga newspaper clue: “Ghostly Rumors haunt new historical Society”
Trzecia newspaper clue: “Local Ghost” Little Joe” at in Again”
You have to find three leads to complete the minigame.
After you have collected these three clues, Bae will ask you if you want to go now. You won’t find anything else here, so you can turn off the computer. After the visit in the library, you will meet up at Gregg’s place to discuss the details.
After the conversation, you will be back home and you can go to sleep, after you have performed such activities as talking to the father or checking the computer.
Again, in your dream, you will have to find the four musicians. One of them is to the right, at the very top. The second one is to the right of the starting point. You have to climb a little to find him. The third one is at the ledge of the map, on the left. To get the last one, backtrack a little and climb down. Return to the starting point for the dream to end.
If you go with Gregg, you will go to a haunted house.
Ext morning, you can decide whwther you want to go to the graveyard with Bea, to the park with Angus, or to an old haunted house with Gregg. Pick one of the options, but later into the game, you will still have to visit one of the remaining locations.
After you go to the abandoned house with Gregg, you will watch a short cutscene and afterwards, you will go into the basement. Cross the basement and climb up the stairs to the ground floor. Then, use the lift to get even higher.
You can see the room at that floor, because Gregg will tell you a story there. Still, you will have to go to another lift. Take the ride higher up and approach another lift. It is locked and you have to find something to open it with.
In this room, you will find out what it was that kept creaking.
Enter the next room and press all the buttons there. See the cutscene and enter the statue in the corner. Underneath, there is a toolbox, but this is not enough to open the lift.
Take a ride on the only available lift, two floors down to get to the office. On one of the desks, there is the item that you need. Go back two floors up, where the locked lift is. As soon as you take a ride down, you will get into the basement.
Take the nearby lift. While Gregg is working, you will hae to make sure that you can escape, just in case. The entrance that you took will turn out to be locked. Finally, Gregg will succeed with the lift and you will take a ride into a new location.
After a moment’s exploration, somebody will come up on the lift. Gregg will smash the window and you will take the fire escape to flee.
After you come back home, you can go to sleep. Again, you will have a sream, but this one is different. Keep running ahead, up until you meet someone. Talk to the person and the dream will end.
After you come to the graveyard, after a short walk, Bae will let your hand go and go to her mother’s grave. You, on the other hand, have to find the another grave. Backtrack and use the interaction key each time the hand icon appears (three times).
After that, Mae will start to worry about Bae, so go to find her. After a conversation, it will turn out that she hears voices coming from the hill. Use the jump button to start climbing.
While on top, you will encounter some figures that will start asking questions. You can give just any answers, because it does not matter here.
Answer the questions in accordance with your own conscience.
After the conversation, you will be let go and you will go into the next location. There, it will turn out that the passage is locked. Jump onto the roof of the nearby chapel and jump over the gate. Stand on the longest branch and start jumping to snap the branch and open the gate.
Climb down and, at the very bottom, you will find the grave you have been looking for. Now, you will have to take a look around to find three markers. Two of them are to the right, and the other one to the left of the grave. After Mae comments on that, return to Bae and talk to her. Then, start jumping over the grave located to the right of Bae. After you jump for three times, the soil will crumble and you will find a coffin.
After a while, a minigame appears, where you simply have to open the coffin. You have to reach the black handle in the upper-right corner and pull by the lid. It will turn out that you have been watched and have to escape.
You can go to the park with Angus. Go straight ahead, while talking to him. Each time you take a turn, Angus will entertain you with a nice conversation. Keep climbing up the hill.
In the next location, Angus will stop by the old lectern. He will climb up whereas you, after the conversation with him, have to collect two yellow devices hung on bushes. They are to the left of the lectern. After you have collected them, return to Angus and the story will move on.
In the next location, go to the end of the cliff and talk to him there.
After a while, a minigame will start, where you have to connect stars to unlock a constellation. There are no problems with that, because it is impossible to make an incorrect connection.
You have to discover four constellations for the park scene to end.
Next day, you will have to choose again, between Bea and Gregg.
Hang out with Gregg
If you go with Gregg, you will end up in a car with Angus, but at some point, you will get a flat tire. All will be thinking on how to fix that. You, on the other hand, go to the right and the left end of the location and interact with the marker. Then, approach the car and it will turn out that you actually have a spare.
Mae will be very frustrated in the bathroom and she will have to give vent to her emotions.
Eventually, you will reach your destination and you will be able to choose what to buy. This, however, in no way affects what you actually get. Afterwards, you will go to the bathroom, where there is a minigame to play, where you unroll toilet paper. Simply, keep tapping W and S key alternately, until the game ends.
Afterwards, Mae will try to scrath the mirror. Use movement keys to move fingernails over the mirror.
The next game is that of unrolling toilet paper. Keep tapping C key.
Afterwards, you will have to use the hand dryer. Using the interaction button, stuff the nozzle with toilet paper.
Playing in the woods.
After you return to your friends, you will start eating doughnuts, which resembles eating pizza in chapter 1. Simply, keep talking and eat those of the doughnuts that seem appealing.
Next day, you will witness two scenes and you will come back home. This time around, you will not have any dreams, while sleeping.
Hang out with Bea
If you go with Bea, you will go to a party. After several scenes, you will meet the host and walk inside.
After the conversation with two new friends, you will go to the dancefloor. Dance a little, until Jackie tells you that the two are back. The girls will go to them and you, stay on the floor, until Mae gets bored. Go right, where you can talk to a new person. Then, return to Beatrice and, after a longer conversation, she will leave and you will follow.
Now, you have to find her. Go right and jump onto the roof, over the car, to get to the riverside faster. Keep jumping from one roof to another, where she is waiting. After the final scene, you will go back home.
After you wake up next morning, go out. While you are going to your friends, you will be accosted by a policeman. After a short conversation, he will let you go. Today, you will be able to visit one of the locations that you have not yet visited, i.e. the abandoned house, the graveyard, the park. What locations are available depends on which one, of the three you have already been to. The available locations are the ones that you decided not to go to then. Descriptions of each of the locations can be found earlier in the text.
During the ghost hunt, you will witness a dark scene.
After the second trip (abandoned house, the graveyard or the park), you wil meet up with everyone and you will go to the woods, for a ghost hunt.
Go straight ahead and the scenery will slowly turn from blue to red. Eventually, you will stop and you will witness a scene, where some cutists accouse a captive man that he laft a severed hand in the town.
After that, you will still have to flee from the mysterious men. Regardless of whether you hop over the obstacles, or trip over them, this chapter will end.
Now, you will play as Gregg or Beatrice, depending on which one of them you spent more time with. Talk to everybody in the room and at some point, it will turn out that there is somebody standing behind the door. The scene will end. Regardless of whom you are controlling, the game will follow the same path.
You will be back in your body. You are battered, but you are still alive. Go straight ahead. After you pass three locations, you will run out of steam and you will fall to the ground again. People will find you and they will take you to the church. After a short cutscene, you will wake up in your home.
After you wake up, you will feel the urge to meet with Gregg.
In spite of the bad condition, you will have to go to Gregg. In his house, everybody will be relieved to be able to welcome you. However, you will go to sleep again and, after several cutscenes, you will be able to eat pizza. However, it will turn out that your stomach refuses to accept any food, so simply let the scene finish, while you are trying to eat.
After you cut to your character, talk to everybody and ask them to go to sleep. However, you will not be able to sleep yourself and, after a conversation with Gregg, you will get up from the bed and leave the appartment.
Finally, you will come face-to-face with the ghostly figure.
Return to the place where you have seen the cultists and you will notice the ghostly figure that has been haunting you. Watch the cutscene and you will get into the mine. Afterwards, you will be back up, but you will be attacked by the ghost that you have been chasing earlier. Kick it by pressing the interaction key, and the man will die The tunnel has collapsed, so you will have to find another way to the surface. Break the beam, by grabbing by its edge and lead on.
The final battle.
You will reach a pond. Enter the water to cross it and, after a while, you will lose ground under your feet. After another cutscene, you will be still alive and your friends will go up to the surface. Jump over the shelves to leave the mine.
As soon as you do that, listen to the conversations until you fall asleep.
Finally, you can still walk around the town and talk to people. As usual, they have something interesting to say. To end the game, talk to a friend at the band reghearsal. Who you will talk to at the end, depends on who you spent the most time with.
