GAME to start selling in WHSmith

UK retailer GAME is to open branded concessions in select WHSmith stores as part of a trial scheme.

The chain told in a statement: “GAME Retail is rolling out a small number of concessions as part of an ongoing trial across WHSmith stores in 2016.

“Alongside our 300 high street stores it means easier access to top video games, accessories and merchandise for our community of gamers nationwide.”

WHSmith used to offer a modest selection of other games, but pulled out of the games market in 2010.

It’s been a troubled few years for GAME, which entered administration in 2012. The company was subsequently purchased by OpCapita and a new head of operations appointed, but it still experienced an 81% year-on-year drop in profits last Christmas, missing its sales targets.

High street games retail has been hit hard by digital sales and online giants like Amazon. The pattern of decline in physical distribution continues, with sales falling 3.5% year-on-year in the 12 weeks before Christmas in 2015.

Concessions in other retailers is no doubt an attempt by GAME to stem the tide and find a way to compensate for lost revenue.

Much like the rest of the entertainment industry, Christmas is a key sales period for GAME. Whether more focused selections of games in other stores will help – probably similar to those offered by major supermarkets like Tesco – is yet to be seen.
