Wander the wilderness in Firewatch free-roam mode

The developer of Firewatch, Campo Santo, has announced that the story-driven indie game will be receiving a free-roam mode that allows players to explore Shoshone at their leisure.

The new mode includes dynamic 24 hour time of day, a whole load of trails to explore, and will allow players to retreat from that slightly terrifying thing called “reality” with scenes of natural beauty. In order to unlock free-roam, players must first complete the game’s story mode, which by all accounts is really rather good.

The patch has already been delivered to Xbox One, and today will also be distributed to PlayStation 4 and PC.

Firewatch has also received PS4 Pro support, which means that those lucky people who have Sony’s most powerful-ever console arriving at their homes today will be able to view the game world at a resolution of 2560×1440.

Earlier this year Campo Santo also added the Firewatch Audio Tour to the game, which adds a developer commentary along with concept art, and behind-the-scenes demonstrations.

“A few months ago we sat down and thought it’d be great to ship a commentary mode with Firewatch, so, we did the logical next thing and started making one,” said Director Sean Vanaman.

“And then we made some more. And then we thought it’d be neat to build some exhibits out in the forest that would show you how we made certain things in the game. Then we added a scavenger hunt. Then, after a time, we realised we didn’t have a commentary mode on our hands, we had a full-on audio tour…”

We loved Firewatch, and the game is only £14.99 on the PlayStation Store. If you’re after a brief sojourn from the outside world before getting back out there and doing great things, then we can think of few more beautiful alternatives.
