Nintendo has announced that Super Mario Run, its second venture into the world of mobile gaming, will be released on December 15.
The game will be free to download from the app store. Without payment, players will be able to explore basic versions of the game’s three modes. These become fully unlocked once the user makes a payment of £7.99 in the UK ($9.99 in the U.S.).

Super Mario Run is marketed by Nintendo as the ‘Mario game you can play with one hand.’ Rather than moving on demand, Mario moves constantly in Run, leaving the player to control various jumps through context-sensitive taps. “Mario will behave differently depending on the timing of your taps,” says Nintendo, “so it’s up to you to show off particularly smooth moves, gather coins, and reach the goal.”
The three modes include single-player, a challenge mode which allows players to compete against one another’s scores, and a creative mode which uses the coins and Toads gathered from the previous two to allow construction of new levels.
