RimWorld is a strategy game about managing an extraterrestrial colony, the debut production of the independent studio Luedon. The story of RimWorld takes place in the distant future, in which humanity colonized countless alien systems. Unfortunately, this did not go together with the invention of a faster-than-light travel system, meaning that every colony is practically isolated and left to their own fate. Players take command over a small group of survivors of a colony space ship that crashed on an uncharted planet.

Each character has its own background, which determines how he functions in game. During a game we build structures, produce food, gather resources, trade, and develop our colony. Unlike other similar games, RimWorld offers a complex tactical combat system.

One of the most interesting features of the game is a dynamic artificial intelligence system responsible for storytelling. It can analyze the current state of the map and use this information to generate new story arcs, adjusting the drama of the story as needed.

More About RimWorld

In the first place, always make sure to satisfy the needs of the colonists - General hints - Key information - RimWorld Game Guide
In the first place, always make sure to satisfy the needs of the colonists

If you are a beginner Rimworld player, select a classic scenario with three colonists. Match their qualities, so that they complement each other. At first, you will own plentiful resources and you can develop your colony without hindrance.

Your selection of the AI Storyteller is material for the later stages of the game. Select Phoebe and Free Game mode thanks to which you can play without any worries and learn game basics.

While selecting the map of the world in which your colonists will set camp, it is a good idea to select a mountainous area – drilling tunnels and rooms into the mountains will cut down your metal consumption.

Save the game very often – in case of a failure or a cataclysm, load saved game. Many of the events are randomly generated.

Take care of each one of the colonists, because this means a faster rate of development of the colony and more tasks that can be performed during the day.

Rely on cultivation of soil and invest in various crops. Potatoes are the basic crop – they grow fast and save your colonists from starvation.

Spend some time on selecting our colonists and determination of their qualities. Many of the qualities will make the game harder for you (e.g. inability to perform simple tasks), whereas others will speed up the development of your colony.

As soon as you learn the basics with Phoebe, try playing with Cassandra and Randy - they offer a completely different pace and emotional content of the game - General hints - Key information - RimWorld Game Guide
As soon as you learn the basics with Phoebe, try playing with Cassandra and Randy – they offer a completely different pace and emotional content of the game

As soon as you learn the basics of the game, it is a good idea to advance to a higher difficulty level. Rimworld uses a unique system of Storytellers that ensure interesting stories and the course of the action.

Use the pause frequently and plan your next steps. In the architecture mode, you can also select the planning option and define construction plans for your colony.

The key issue is to ensure shelter and food for your colonists. Set this as your first priority. Depending on the difficulty level and on the Storyteller, you will initially own some supplies that will allow you to survive for the next several days. Use that time wisely, because soon random events will start to take place.

When you map out an area for storage, make sure it is enclosed in walls and roofed. Many of the items and food are perishable and can quickly go off without proper conservation.

While hunting for animals, or attacking others, you can select between melee weapon and firearm. Both of them are effective, but it is a good idea to rely on ranged attacks, because injuries take long to heal and they can leave permanent defects. While attacking with firearm, you are less likely to suffer from counterattack.

When it comes to food, a good idea is to temporary pick berry bushes. Also, you can dispatch your hunters on hunting (pick the weaker animals, thanks to which the colonist will not be killed), but remember that you need a butcher’s table to obtain meat. Ensure abundance of edible crops and store food for future – you can turn them into paste or add them as an ingredient, to higher-quality foods.

Definition of manual priorities will aid you at the beginning of the game - General hints - Key information - RimWorld Game Guide
Definition of manual priorities will aid you at the beginning of the game

In the work tab, select manual priority. The lower a given number, the higher the priority of a given work. In the first place, colonists take to the performance of works with higher priority. By default, colonists will perform tasks they have the knack for – it is a good idea to make sure, at the beginning that each one of them is a builder or a miner, which will speed up the development of the colony.

On the other hand, in the commands tab, it is a good idea to pick the option that makes the colonists fight, instead of running away from danger (the crossed swords icon).

If necessary, recruit a given colonist for military service. You can command him to attack the attacker, or simply have him move into a safe area.

Do not lose your spirits! Rimworld can be difficult at times, and even unfair – if a given colony fails to survive, start a new game. Each game is unique and will allow you to discover new elements that abound here.

In Rimworld, you will control a group of colonists. At the very beginning, you can define their parameters, their traits and even their backstories. After you have defined those (the options have been described later in this guide), you will start the game. You can control your colony with a multitude of options. What may prove helpful is hotkeys that will facilitate management. The most important ones are:

After you select a new colony, you can select one of three game modes - Game modes - Key information - RimWorld Game Guide
After you select a new colony, you can select one of three game modes

After you select your colony, the game will offer three scenarios:

  • Crashlanded – this is the classic, default, game mode. Here, you start off with three colonists that you can pick yourself. You start the game with plenty of supplies and you will have access to firearms. You will also be accompanied by an animal companion and on the map, you will be able to retrieve the rest of supplies from your ship. This is the best mode for beginners.
  • The Rich Explorer – This scenario assumes that a single colonist has crash-landed on a planet. You start the game with abundance of supplies and powerful weapons. From the very beginning, you will have access to technology that will allow you to build defense cannons. However, this mode is more demanding than the previous one, because the qualities of the remaining colonists are randomly generated.
  • Lost Tribe – This scenario is interesting in that instead of a members of a colony, your colonists are tribe members. You start the game with five inhabitants of the planet and available resources are scanty. From the very beginning, you will have to obtain food, but you will be aided by three animal companions. It is better to pick this scenario after you have already gained experience with the game.

Your selection of the AI Storyteller has a tremendous meaning for the course of the game - Game modes - Key information - RimWorld Game Guide
Your selection of the AI Storyteller has a tremendous meaning for the course of the game

After you have selected the scenario, you will have to make another important choice – you have to pick your AI Storyteller. The Storyteller is responsible for the pace of the game, the rate at which random events occur and their difficulty. You can pick one of three:

  • Cassandra Classic – This is your default Storyteller, who will ensure more and more difficult tasks for you. The beginning of the game is quite relaxed, but with time, it will get increasingly more difficult. However, it should be noted that the tasks will be scaled to your skills. Cassandra will not be bent on destroying your colony and her goal will be to put you to the test over and over again.
  • Phoebe Chillax – With Phoebe, the game is a regular story of colonists who build a new home for themselves. The pace of the game is incredibly slow and it does not surprise you with, virtually, any threats. This is the best mode for beginners who do not want to struggle against fate adversities and simply want to build their colony. Remember however that with Phoebe, you will not experience the best the game has to offer – the prickles of excitement and the uncertainty of the next day.
  • Randy Random – Randy is a unique Storyteller. Stories and events generated by him have nothing to do with the abilities of your colonists. The only thing he cares about is the fast paced and diverse gameplay. He is a madman, which makes him the most interesting Storyteller of all, because he provides the most riveting of stories. However, you have to prepare yourself for a difficult game, especially as a beginner. However, it is Randy with whom you can build the most extensive colonies and fight the greatest battles.

After you select your AI Storyteller, you can still define additional parameters of the game - Game modes - Key information - RimWorld Game Guide
After you select your AI Storyteller, you can still define additional parameters of the game

Additionally to your AI Storyteller you can pick an additional option:

  • Free game – This is a typical sandbox mode, where you can enjoy building your colony and restrict random events to a minimum.
  • Basebuilder – This mode is similar to the free game one, but it presents the player with a bit more challenging tasks.
  • Rough – This mode lacks any additional parameters that would affect bonuses to colonists’ mental state, etc. Apart from that, random events become dangerous and more demanding here.
  • Challenge – The name speaks for itself. The game becomes a challenge at this point. Apart from skills, you also have to rely on luck and your brains, to build a prosperous colony.
  • Extreme – This is the ultimate and the most difficult game mode. Bad mental state will be prevalent among your colonists, the opponents will be strong and rewards and, pods will provide scarce resources.
  • Permadeath – This is an additional option, which leaves you with only one game save slot. The game saves only at the moment of leaving the game.

IT is a good idea to select a welcoming area that will be safe for the colonists - Selection of initial location - Key information - RimWorld Game Guide
IT is a good idea to select a welcoming area that will be safe for the colonists

With the scenario and the Storyteller selected, you will start defining a new world. Select the seed and the size of the world – new game map will pop up. You can select any of the fields as your starting area. After you click on a field, the you will receive information on that area on the left. You will learn about the temperature, precipitations, climate, type of rocks, etc. Also, you should note how often you can cultivate the soil. Each of the climates has its advantages and disadvantages. An interesting option is to pick a mountainous area as your starting location. You can drill tunnels and chambers into mountains, thanks to which you can save up plenty of metal. Apart from that, mountains are easy to secure against attacks from the outside. For starters, it is best to pick area around moderate forests/mountains – this will allow you to grow crops and build shelter in the mountains. Also, this will shelter you from unfavorable temperatures and rain.

There are many options available in colonists creation menu - Colonists creation - Key information - RimWorld Game Guide

Now, you can create colonists that will inhabit the planet. You start with a different number of colonists depending on the scenario that you have picked. By pressing the “Randomize” button, you can generate new colonists. Each one has his own backstory, age, looks and traits. It is even possible to define his relationship with the rest of the colonists. Therefore, you can easily create a family, lovers or enemies. If it is possible to create a higher number of colonists, make sure that their traits are supplementary with respect to each other. While selecting the colonists, especially note:

  • Backstory – childhood and adulthood have a decisive effect on additional traits and skills of the colonist. After you roll the mouse over the backstory, you will receive additional information. If the colonist used to be, e.g. an actor, he will receive + to Social, +2 to Construction but will be incapable of lumbering, transportation and cleaning.
  • Incapable of – it shows you what your colonist cannot do. Make sure that this field is empty, or there is only one colonist that has some an incapability. If you create a colony of men that are unable to perform simple tasks, you won’t hold for long.
  • Traits – initially, each colonist has 2-3 traits which additionally affect his behavior. A colonist can be lazy, charismatic, be a genius, etc. In general, the majority of traits provide you with a positive and a negative bonus to statistics. For example, a neurotic works 20% faster, but can easier develop a nervous breakdown, by 8%.
  • Health – some colonists can start the game with some health and physical deficiencies. Scars, scratches or healed injuries can cause a given colonist to move slower, be more vulnerable to damage, etc.
  • Relationships – it shows you in what relationships a colonist remains with the other characters. You can have partner, family and even hostile ones.

While picking colonists, the most important are their skills - number of flames by a given skill determines predispositions of a given character, how fast they work and how fast they will gain specialization points - Colonists creation - Key information - RimWorld Game Guide
While picking colonists, the most important are their skills – number of flames by a given skill determines predispositions of a given character, how fast they work and how fast they will gain specialization points

The most important thing, when it comes to character creation are skills:

  • Shooting – one of the key skills in the game. It is a good idea to pick, at least, one colonist that can handle guns well. Such a character will make an excellent hunter and defender, especially if armed with a powerful ranged weapon.
  • Hand to hand- it is as useful as shooting. The higher the level, the better the character fights and melee. Although knives, maces and other weapons are powerful, direct attack expose colonists to damage. Hand to hand may be a good choice for hunting smaller game.
  • Social – this is a set of skills that allow the colonist to interact with others. Characters with high level of social skills can easily comfort others, convince, command and negotiate better prices. Although such skills are valuable, it is better to give preference to other ones in the first place.
  • Taming – characters with high level of taming skills can quickly and effectively tame and train animals. This is an interesting skill in that such animals can later be used for transportation, to help others, or for combat. However, also in this case, there are skills that are more important.
  • Medicine – another key skill. Characters with high level of medicine can help the injured, heal diseases and even perform surgeries. In the colony, there always should be a doctor on duty, because the game abounds in occasions to get injured.
  • Cooking – this is an important skill that you will appreciate later into the game. When you can already afford a kitchen and assign a good cook to it, you will put a permanent end to hunger in the colony. Tasty meals that are prepared quickly will provide you with a bonus to the colonists’ mental state.
  • Construction – yet another key skill. It allows you to erect buildings, build furniture, etc. The higher the level the higher the quality of the structures. There should be at least one colonist that is familiar with construction.
  • Growing – this one is an immensely important skill, thanks to which colonists can cultivate soil. One of the greatest problems in Rimworld is scarcity of food – if you invest in fertile arable fields, you will ensure a steady access to food.
  • Mining – another important skill. If you plan to build a colony inside a mountain, it becomes key at the very beginning of the game. The higher the mining level, the faster the colonist works and mines for resources.
  • Artistic – it defines whether a given colonist is capable of creating a piece of art, such as statues that lend aesthetic value of the site, etc. This skill becomes useful later into the game and you can easily do without it.
  • Crafting – another important skill that defines the colonist’s competence in creation of new items, weapons, etc. It is a good idea to keep a colonist that will craft new equipment and outfits or others.
  • Research – this is one of the most important skills in the game. Colonists with high level of research can discover new technologies and as a result, new buildings, pieces of furniture, etc. It is imperative that you have a colonist that is a decent researcher.

As you can see, there are so many variables that it is impossible to create an ideal group of colonists. You can only make sure that your characters complement each other and alleviate each other’s shortcomings. Remember that during the game, your colony will be joined by randomly generated locals, injured passengers of pods, etc. You do not have control over parameters of such characters. Therefore, make sure that the core inhabitants of your colony have key skills.
